3rd Annual Ridgway River Festival call for entries for Junk of the Unc Race
Ridgway,
One of the most popular events each year is the whimsical Junk of the Unc race. Sure to inspire shoreline laughter, this competition invites novice and experienced boaters alike to bring in a homemade vessel and demonstrate its river-worthiness. Boaters will attempt to make it from the Rollans Park foot bridge, travel one quarter mile, to the eddy just south of the railroad bridge before their boat falls apart. Most any vessel is acceptable and awards are given for creativity.
It is never too early to start designing a vessel! Ridgway local Willy Krois dominated the 2009 competition with his 25 foot ‘Bob Marley’ kayak made of cardboard and plastic. Junk of the Unc Most Original went to Pipe Panic (made of PVC pipes) and S.S.S.S. (made with toilet seats). The race is slated to start at 2pm.
A variety of river events are planned for this year’s River Festival, including races in 3 categories (racing kayaks, inflatable crafts, and whitewater kayaks) and a whitewater rodeo. Registration for all events will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. at a well-marked picnic bench in Rollans Park. Participants can register before the festival by downloading the River Event Form online at www.ridgwayriverfestival.org. Contestants are encouraged to bring their ACA (American Canoe Association) card with them to receive a discount on registration fees.
